Dear Jet,

One quick question: what made you choose to play the role of Chen Zhen in Fist of Legend? Was there a particular quality in the storyline that attracted you to play the role? Thank you!

Merriam

Jet's Response:

When I watched Bruce Lee's The Chinese Connection, I found that the topic was too narrow, that it focused on only one point of view. The Japanese were all evil, and were portrayed as unsympathetic villains. This, obviously, was not the case in real life. In Fist of Legend, I had hoped for a broader view of the characters. At the time of Japan's invasion of China, not all of the Japanese people wanted to have war. I'm sure there were many who quite opposed the invasion, the expansionist policies and atrocities of their brotherhood armies. In much the same way, not all the Chinese were good. In every group of people, there are bound to be varying percentages of the good ones, and then the rotten apples, sometimes well hidden.

What attracted me the most in Fist of Legend, then, was how the movie showed that not all the Japanese people were bad. Some were pacifists who harbored no ill intent toward the Chinese, and who disapproved of the choices of their fellow countrymen. And more importantly, it told of a love between a Chinese man and a Japanese woman. Love is something that, in my opinion, does not have any national nor racial boundaries; it is just that, love. I thought the movie made a good point of this crucial lesson that is much too often overlooked.

The character of Chen Zhen was interesting in that, though he was highly trained in martial arts, he chose to go to Japan to study engineering. This is a choice that I can relate to, for I always believe strongly in having a balanced lifestyle. One cannot expect to learn everything just through learning martial arts alone. There are other ways to acquire knowledge, other untapped areas of human resource. Studying is never a static process; it continues indefinitely. One must always study to keep up with the times, as is often said.
