ROMEO MUST DIE PREMIERES AUGUST 1 ON DVD & VIDEO
MARTIAL ARTS SUPERSTAR JET LI MAKES SPECIAL APPEARANCE AT THE VIDEO SOFTWARE DEALERS CONVENTION WARNER HOME VIDEO BOOTH JULY 9
Las Vegas (July 10, 2000) ?On Sunday, July 9, video retailers from across the nation turned out in force to meet actor and martial arts phenomenon Jet Li -- star of Romeo Must Die, the rapid-fire action movie making its DVD and VHS debut August 1. Originally, scheduled to appear from 1:30-3:30 pm at the Warner Home Video booth (#1302), Li stayed an additional hour to try and accommodate all those still waiting in line to greet the star and receive an autograph. The appearance was part of the 19th annual VSDA Convention and Expo at the Sands Expo and Venetian Hotel.
Joel Silver, who produced the Academy-Award?winning The Matrix, also produced Romeo Must Die, the $55-million theatrical box-office hit which marks the first directorial effort for well-known cinematographer Andrzej Bartkowiak and the first English language starring role for Li.
Featured on the VHS is singer Aaliyah's music video "Try Again" (which also features Jet Li) from Virgin Records' smash hit Romeo Must Die - The Movie album. "Try Again" made music history as the first single to reach # 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart without dual benefit of radio play and single sales. The DVD contains two additional videos, "Come Back in One Piece" and "Making Aaliyah's 'Try Again' Video."
The Romeo Must Die DVD and DVD-ROM will also contain a number of added features, highlighted by an exclusive web link to an awesome new interactive challenge called "A Martial Arts Experience," in which players can "fight" their way through the film as an actual character.
The Romeo Must Die DVD has the following:
- The HBO First Look Special behind-the-scenes documentary "Making Romeo Must Die"
- The featurettes "Stairway Dance," "Kung Fu Football," "A Benz, a Bike, a Babe and Some Badass Kung Fu," "The Hose" and "Master on Fire," which reveal inside secrets to the film's heart-stopping action sequences.
- The milestone Aaliyah music video "Try Again" plus two others, "Come Back in One Piece" and "Making Aaliyah's 'Try Again' Video."
- "Visual Effects Process" and "The Soundstage."
- Two theatrical trailers and filmographies of key cast and crew.
- Dual-layer format, widescreen presentation with Dolby Digital Audio in English or French with subtitles.
The enhanced features for DVD-ROM PCs include:
- Original theatrical web site archived directly on the disc, including Web Links.
- Access to exclusive Web events and chat rooms.
- Interactive challenge, "A Martial Arts Experience.
In Romeo Must Die, Jet Li plays disgraced ex-cop Han, who makes his way from a Hong Kong jail to Oakland upon hearing of his brother's murder during a brutal turf war between the city's powerful Asian and African-American gangs. While trying to uncover the truth behind the bloodshed, he shares an attraction with Trish O'Day (played by Aaliyah in her film debut), even though their families are bitter rivals. Soon, Han becomes a target, but unlike his attackers who use weapons, Han is a weaponand falling into his sightline can be a deadly mistake.
Romeo Must Die also stars Delroy Lindo ("The Cider House Rules"), Henry O ("Snow Falling On Cedars"), Russell Wong ("The Joy Luck Club"), Isaiah Washington ("True Crime"), D.B. Woodside (TV's "The Temptations) and Anthony Anderson ("Me, Myself & Irene"). Written by Eric Bernt and John Jarell, from a story by Mitchell Kapner, the film was produced by Joel Silver and Jim Van Wych, and executive produced by Dan Cracchiolo.
